Your Local Expert

Jordan Pond

Jordan came to Alaska to back country ski in Valdez after graduating from the University of Utah. While there, he guided ski touring expeditions. He first set eyes on Johnstone Bay while on a surfing trip aboard the M/V Milo. He had explored much of coastal Alaska via jet ski and what he saw at Johnstone Bay was something spectacular and unique. Jamie came to Alaska after leaving a job as a police detective. She lived and worked as a kayaking guide on a remote island on Kodiak and fell deeply in love with the "feeling" of wilderness. She left Alaska to travel the world, but knew instantly that she would return to Alaska and make it her permanent home. Jamie has worked as a recreation guide/coordinator for an Alaskan non-profit that advocates equal access for people who experience disability. When the couple met, they instantly connected on the love of wilderness. Together, they decided to build guest chalets at Johnstone Bay in order to share the experience with others.

The Journey

Day 1

The flight

Meet your pilot at the Seward Airport and be prepared for some incredible birds eye views of fjords, glaciers, and wildlife. Upon landing at Johnstone Bay, you'll meet the family who own and built Johnstone Adventure Lodge. They'll show you around, introduce you to the magnificent area, and feed you an awesome dinner.

Day 2

Exploration aboard a zodiac and kayak

Johnstone Bay is located within a glacially carved valley. In the past century, the Excelsior Glacier has dramatically receded into what is now a five mile long, one mile wide, and 800-feet-deep glacier lagoon. Paddling this lake, you will see a part of the world that very few have seen.

Day 3

Explore via hiking

You can hike up a mountain, beside a glacier, or explore the forest. The level or difficulty and activity is up to you as options are limitless. Discuss your wishes with Jordan and Jamie so they can cater an experience that fits you and your group specifically.

Day 4

Return flight

Wake up early to enjoy your last hours of wilderness serenity or stay in bed to relax after your adventures. Your flight out will come to whisk you away mid-day. Depending on weather, your pilot may take you back to Seward using a different flight path so you can see even more of the breathtaking coastal Alaskan landscape.
