Delve into a world of ocean beauty, sharks and other marine creatures! Have the chance to see the magnificent great white shark in its natural habitat, come face to face with bronze whalers on our cage diving trips, and meet the beautiful smaller shark species along our coastline. Our programme is an exciting opportunity for you to get involved with meaningful shark and marine research in the beautiful country of South Africa! As a volunteer at our institute you will have the opportunity to contribute to conservation, research, and education initiatives in a location unlike any other in the world. During your time with us you will get the chance to be on our white shark cage-diving boat assisting with data collection, as well as on our research vessel where you will learn ethical handling and angling techniques, how to tag, how to take measurements and genetic samples of other shark species we have in the area. You will also conduct shark snorkelling surveys in the beautiful kelp beds along our coastline. We are running a number of research projects on sharks; from white shark population monitoring using dorsal fin identification, to establishing white shark growth rates, to determining life history characteristics of other species in the area, to looking at population decline, movement patterns and habitat use, which is primarily done through catch and release tagging studies and video surveys. And unlike other volunteer programmes, we never make you do menial labour!read more

Cindy Tilney

I have always been a nature lover and our programme has offered me a chance to realise my dream - to help to conserve and protect our oceans, coasts and their creatures. Like many people, I have in the past had an inherent terror of sharks, but seeing them in their natural habitat, interacting with them and learning more about them has given me newfound love and respect. Not only great whites - though they are truly magnificent - but all the sharks along our coasts who play such a vital role in conserving our seas, and in turn our planet. I am grateful to have had the chance, along with our imensely passionate marine biologist, Mary Rowlinson, and our other shark-crazy colleagues - to contribute to the preservation of these incredible animals and our marine environment.read more
