The Journey

Day 1

Eat a local lunch and drink banana beer at Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Centre

After breakfast you will drive to Musanze, the second largest town in Rwanda, with its stunning backdrop of five volcanic mountains – the Virungas. You will quickly see why Rwanda is called The Land of 1000 Hills! The drive is approximately 2.5 hours. Lunch will be at Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Centre where you can take part in cooking lessons and help prepare Rwandese dishes in a typical African kitchen (optional). In the afternoon take part in banana beer production and learn about the chemical process of brewing local beer. You can even join the women in squeezing the juice out of the bananas! Drink a glass of the freshly prepared juice (optional). Overnight: Red Rocks Campsite, Musanzeread more

Day 2

Golden Monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park

Your day starts early with a quick breakfast before driving to Volcanoes National park in Kinigi. It’s a 45-minute drive from the Red Rocks to Kinigi, here you will meet your rangers and forest guides who will guide you into the forest to trek the golden monkey, a species related to the blue monkey that is only found within the Virunga Massif area. Entering dense stands of bamboo interspersed with open glades, you will make your way deep into golden monkey territory. Guides lead visitors to the groups of ‘habituated’ golden monkeys, animals that have become accustomed to human presence. This beautiful trek shows incredible views of the volcanoes and farmland and will take you until midday. After your trek, drive back to the Red Rocks Campsite for a late lunch. In the afternoon, spend some time with local artists at Red Rocks Initiatives Art Gallery and learn from the conservation-themed art exhibits how art promotes and supports conservation of the surrounding environment. Here you may see live painting demonstrations and have a chance to create your own art and take it home as a souvenir. Overnight: Red Rocks Campsite, Musanzeread more

Day 3

Village walk and basket weaving

After an early breakfast take part in a village walk and gain a unique insight into Rwandan cultural and historical norms. During the walk you will join village families in the gardens cutting grass for farm animals. Later in the afternoon join the local women’s association for basket-weaving process. Learn the long history and culture of making beautiful handcrafted items. Overnight: Red Rocks Campsite, Musanzeread more

Day 4

A morning on the river and Red Rocks Initiatives

Spend the morning hours on a gentle river in the lush countryside, near the gorillas, canoeing amongst the hills of Rwanda. Discover a special way of travel, soak up impressive views, watch abundant birdlife, float past rural communities and find excitement on the river. After lunch at Red Rocks, immerse yourself in Red Rocks Initiatives experiences. Our eco-friendly programmes have been developed to conserve natural resources and preserve our heritage. Development through sustainable community tourism is at the heart of Red Rocks Initiatives and most of our programmes are related to animal welfare and conservation education. Leave a positive mark: interact with the community through art, tree planting, visiting the botanical gardens and other cultural activities. Join the community for a workshop on Sustainable Development Talks (SDT). Overnight: Red Rocks Campsite, Musanzeread more

Day 5

An agricultural tour

After breakfast, we embark on an agricultural tour. Join a village family for a tour of their gardens. Now it’s time to get your hands dirty! Help cut the grass for the farm animals and learn about traditional methods of farming in a practical, hands-on way. A wide range of conservation activities take place on the farm and you will be actively involved, helping the villagers to plant trees, for example, to help restore the environment. Overnight: Red Rocks Campsite, Musanzeread more

Day 6

Biking and homestay

Take in the beautiful scenery of the village as you cycle through the village and stop to talk to local villagers. Take a ride towards the town centre and shop for crafts or other local products before heading back to Red Rocks. This evening you’ll be staying at a homestay with a friendly Rwandan family. See how local people live their everyday lives, eat local food (and perhaps help to prepare it!) In the evening, listen to their stories of everyday life in Rwanda. Overnight: Homestayread more

Day 7

Volcanoes and the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo

After breakfast drive half an hour to the two beautiful twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo, located adjacent to the Virunga volcanoes. Take a boat on Lake Bulera to explore the breath-taking scenery or join fishermen with their local canoes on the lake. Visit one of the island communities volcanoes (which are particularly impressive on a clear day) from the highest land point. Drive to Red Rocks for a late lunch, where traditional dancers will entertain you and bid you farewell. Later in the evening drive back to Kigali.read more
