Arctic Norway Dogsled Adventure

  • Multi Destination Journey
  • Active adventure
  • 8 days; 7 nights
  • 1 to 4 travelers
  • Begins & ends in Målselv

During our long trips, we travel trough Rohkunborri and Dividalen National parks and their surrounding wilderness areas, at the heart of the Arctic. This is one of the biggest and last wilderness area left in Europe, that extends over the Swedish and Finnish borders. We follow the rhythm of the nature, adjusting our schedule to the weather, snow conditions and available daylight, packing the camp in the morning and traveling between 20 and 100 km a day by dogsled. ⁣ ⁣ Each participant have his own team of 4 to 6 dogs and a sled loaded with what's needed for traveling autonomous trough the mountains. We spend the nights in remote mountain huts, tents or in reindeer herder cabins, and hopefully get to enjoy the northern lights. ⁣ ⁣ The landscapes are varied, big frozen lakes, birch covered valleys, mountain passes and vast, wide open plateaus. This is the home of reindeer, fox, ptarmigan, hare, lynx, wolverine, lemming, moose and brown bear, but usually we only see the tracks of those animals : it feels more like traveling trough a white and snow-covered desert. ⁣ ⁣ Although the area is experienced as a untouched and raw wilderness, it has been the seasonal home for the Sami reindeer herders trough centuries. We will meet reindeers on our trail, and partly follow the old migration routes that were used by the Sami nomads between their winter and summer grassing areas.⁣ ⁣

The Journey

Day 1

Arrival

We pick you up at Bardufoss airport or Buktamoen bus station, and travel to our log-house and lodge, in the heart of Målselv region. At our farm you will meet the group around a welcoming dinner, and enjoy some social time together. We will look at the maps of the region and the weather forecast together, go trough the planning, complete your equipment if necessary, and prepare for our coming adventures.

Day 2

Training day

After breakfast we will meet our happy and friendly huskies and feed them, before preparing for a training run. You will get to know your dog team, which you will have for the rest of the week. We spend around 3 hours on the sleds, learning the basics, before returning to the farm. In the afternoon we go trough the trip, plans and prepare for an early start next day.

Day 3

Dogsled trip

After breakfast we load the dogs and equipment on the car and trailer, and drive 1 hour to the starting point for our trip into Dividalen. There is about 35 km of travel trough the mountains to reach the beautiful and modern cabin of Dertahytta, where we spend our first night away from civilisation.

Day 4

Dogsled trip

Day 3 to 7 we will explore the Dividalen area, one of the biggest wilderness areas in Europe, by dogsled. Depending on weather and snow conditions we can visit places like Rostadalen. Vouma and Gamas. Each day we travel between 25 km and 60 km ( 4 – 6 hours) trough this beautiful landscapes. We have lunch on the trail and spend nights in mountain huts or eventually in a tent camp. The mountains' remoteness + potentially challenging weather conditions demand a flexible tour schedule, and good physical shape of the participants. The tour will be adjusted to the weather on a daily basis! We spend the nights in cabins, which are spread out within a day's traveling distance. Sometimes the weather conditions can slow us down, and we will stay in tents. On this tour the close cooperation between human and dog is particularly important! You will have your own dog team for which you are responsible during the tour. This includes harnessing and supplying the dogs.
