The Journey

Day 1

DAY 1 CHIANG MAI-PAI-LOD CAVE-MAEHONGSON (L,D)

In the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel in Chiang Mai. Afterwards, you will drive to Maehongson, passing through one of the most beautiful mountain highways. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you take a lunch break in the Pai district. In the afternoon, you will visit one of the largest caves in the North of Thailand, Lod Cave. Lod Cave contains three main chambers; first is a “giant pillar cave” with a height of 21 meters, second is a “doll cave” which contains a different kind of stone formation and looks like a doll. The doll cave also contains a very old wall painting that dates back 2,000 years. Third is a “coffin cave”. Take a bamboo raft from the doll cave then climb up to see the remaining wood coffin dating back 2,000 years. In the late afternoon, you will arrive in Maehongson and check in at the Fern Resort. Day 2

DAY 2 HIKE TO HUAY HEE VILLAGE (DAY TREK 1) (L,D)

Trek distance: 9-10 kilometers Duration: 5-6 hours trek Today you will wake up early to be picked up from your hotel and driven to the trail head. You will hike up and then down into the valley of Ban Nam Hoo. Some of the trail is very steep and narrow. During the trek, the Karen people will teach you about the hill evergreen forest and mixed deciduous forest and how they try to preserve them. Follow a trail of wild orchids to the top of a mountain. Huai Hee village is reachable by road. It was the first Karen village to successfully set up community based tourism (CBT) to supplement their income by deepening their relationship their surrounding ecosystem and outsiders. Their livelihood remains primarily based on rotational farming on surrounding mountain slopes. With more than 200 years of settlement history, the population of the village is less than 150. Visitors stay in pairs with each home stay family.read more

Day 3

DAY 3 HIKE TO DOI PUI THE HIGHEST SUMMIT IN MAE HONG SON (DAY TREK 2) (B,L,D)

Trek distance: 9-10 kilometers Duration: 5-6 hours trek After breakfast, meet your guide and prepare for another beautiful hike in the conservation forest area. During your trek, take the opportunity to learn how the Karen live and use their surrounding resources. Your destination is the highest point in Mae Hong Son “Doi Pui” at 1,722 meters above the sea level. Your host family will prepare a local Karen jungle lunch for you. After eating, you will continue your trek and return to the village in the late afternoon. During your stay, take note of how the Karen cook their rice. Relax with a delicious dinner and great conversation with your host family (a translator will accompany you).read more

Day 4

DAY 4 HIKE TO BAN HUAI TONG KAW (DAY TREK 3) (B,L,D)

Trek distance: 17-18 kilometers Duration: 7-8 hours trek This morning, you'll get an early start. After eating breakfast and saying your goodbyes to the villagers, you will start your trek along a gravel road for 1 kilometer. 17-18 kilometers along the trail, you will descend to the river valley and back up a steep trail to Ban Huai Tong Kaw, a great place for visitors to explore the Karen culture. Huai Tong Kaw is reachable by road yet the village has tried to preserve their traditional knowledge. The village is still home to blacksmiths, herbal gurus, spiritual leaders, ritual singers, and sword dancers. The highlight of the attractions of this village is its 150m waterfall. After dinner, watch sword dancing at the village center. Return to a home stay to sleep for the night.read more

Day 5

DAY 5 HIKE TO HUAI KUNG VILAGE (DAY TREK 4) (B,L,D)

Trek distance: 14-15 kilometers Duration: 6-7 hours trek You will begin todays hike by descending into the Valley of Mae Samad River. Visit the biggest waterfall in Mae Hong Son. You will undergo many river crossings and much steep terrain. The village of Huai Kung is a small Buddhist village that consists of approximately 10 households with no direct road access. Situated nearby the Mae Samad River, 380m above sea level, they called this village “Baan Lek Nai Pa-Yai”. It is a small village situated in the ancient forest or primary forest which limits the number of tourists and money in the village. The villagers are dependant on the fresh water fish, hunting game, paddy rice farming, and gathering forest products for food. Huai Kung Village is very good place for swimming, and they will serve you a lot of fish.read more

Day 6

DAY 6 HIKE DOWN TO PA-BONG VILLAGE (DAY TREK 5) (B,L,D)

Trek distance: 9-10 kilometers Duration: 5-6 hours trek Start the day with a relaxing hike down into the valley of Mae Samad River. Today you will again have many rivers crossing and steep terrain. You will walk through a mixed deciduas forest which features many types of wood such as bamboos and red woods. It takes about 4-5 hours to hike to Pa-Bong Village. After, you will be driven about 30 minutes to the Fern Resort. Please note: From June-November, a trail that leads to Ban Nam Hoo Hai Jai will be used instead because the water level is too high.read more

Day 7

DAY 7 MAE HONG SON – CHIANG MAI (L)

Transfer from your hotel or resort. Depart to visit beautiful Shan style temples; one is located on the hilltop named “Wat Phra That Doi Kong Moo” and has views of a nice little town hiding in the valley. Another nice temple located by the lake is named “Wat Jong Kum-Jong Klang”. It features beautiful architecture of Shan style temple. The roof edge is decorated with a hand-crafted zinc sheet. Also, visit a mini-museum which contains very old wood carving dolls from Myanmar. You will eat lunch at a local Thai restaurant. In the afternoon, you will be transferred the Maehongson airport. You will return to Chiang Mai by flight and end the program.read more
